Star Comparisons For This Year’s Rookie Point Guards

This year’s NBA draft appears to be loaded, with loads of talent coming at the point guard position. There are four guys in particular, who have true star potential. They share some remarkable comparisons in terms of play styles with some of the other greats of the game today.

Dennis Smith Jr

Comparison: Pre-injury Derrick Rose

Although it has just been summer league thus far, Dennis Smith Jr has been extremely impressive. He will likely be an immediate starter for the Mavs and has the potential to become their franchise player once Dirk retires.

He’s like Rose in terms of his ultra-explosive athleticism, being able to beat defenders off the dribble and explode to the rim for acrobatic finishes. Smith has also flashed potential on the defensive end, being quick at getting in passing lanes as well as being able to just swat shots into the stands.

If he can avoid the injury bug, unlike D-Rose, Smith can be a special player for a long time.

Prime Stat Predictions: 27.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 8.9 apg, 1.9 spg, 0.7 bpg

De’Aaron Fox

Star Comparison: John Wall

Obviously, this comparison starts with the blazing speed that Fox possesses, just like Wall. Fox is just terrifying in the open court, able to blow by just about anyone and everyone. His speed and athleticism also helps him out on defense, being able to stay with his man, and also to jump passing lanes which ignites the one man fastbreak.

The one issue Fox has to work on is his jumper. His form is decent and his mechanics are good. If he can follow John Wall’s trend, who’s improved greatly as a shooter, then the sky’s the limit for this kid. Maybe he can be the one to lift the Kings out of the gutter.

Prime Stat Predictions: 23.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 8.0 apg, 2.0 spg, 0.2 bpg

Lonzo Ball

Star Comparison: Jason Kidd

Lonzo has flashed potential of being a transcendent passer, and playmaker, exactly like Jason Kidd in his heyday. He has unreal vision, appearing to have eyes on the back of his head.

In the earlier years of his career, Kidd pretty much had no jumpshot, and didn’t fully develop one until his later years. Lonzo doesn’t appear to have that same problem. He has range, extending past the NBA 3. If he is able to hit that at the next level and develop an inbetween game, then the rest of the league better watch out.

Prime Stat Predictions: 23.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 11.1 apg, 1.9 spg, 0.6 bpg

Markelle Fultz

Star Comparison: Dwyane Wade/James Harden

We haven’t been able to see much of Fultz in Summer League, since suffering an ankle injury. However, this kid is special and has the potential to transform the 76ers – along with Simmons and Embiid – into a championship team.

Markelle is like Dwyane Wade in terms of attacking the rim with the jumpshot of James Harden. That is the type of combination that we have rarely seen in the NBA.

Prime Stat Predictions: 29.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 8.5 apg, 1.8 spg, 0.9 bpg
